Follonica and surroundings

Follonica

Follonica is a small town of the Mediterranean sea that originates in the homonymous gulf between Piombino and Punta Ala. Besides its famous beaches like Calaviolina and Casetta Civinini and its long promenades along the seafront, Follonica offers also folkloric events like the renowed Follonichese Carneval that exhibits floats of the six different districts with their masks. It takes place during the four Sundays between the end of January and the beginning of February.

The most renowed places near Follonica are:

The gorgeous medieval city of Massa Marittima(20 km far) that with its beautiful medieval palaces and the famous historical event of the Girifalco’s crossbow attracts every year in May and August millions of tourists from Italy and abroad.

Punta Ala(19 km far): One of the most beautiful sea resorts, that together with Castiglione della Pescaia and Follonica holds the blue flag thanks to its crystalline water. Among the many sport activities golfing is one of the most played and it’s promoted by the structures of the area, because it is considered an excellent and required activity.

Castiglione della Pescaia(23 km far): the town has become famous not only because of its beautiful harbor but also thanks to its tourist attractions like its fortress, which stands at a height of 540 meters creating a wonderful frame to all the promontory.

Populonia and Baratti (29 Km far): Populonia, ancient Etruscan city born on the sea, is located on a hill surrounded by the sea, and still keeps its medieval walls built to defend from pirates. The town is famous for its fortress on whose peak you can enjoy the unique view of the Tuscan archipelago.

Suvereto (26 Km far): ancient medieval village built between the eleventh and the fourteenth century, rich in history and culture as well as festivals and folkloric events.
